purpose
Neighborhood projects set ambitions for the design of the physical environment or the “hardware” of a community, but many formats ignore the social environment or the “software” of community and culture. The Community Engagement Strategy Deck provides ideas to build community capacity through planning and design processes, contributing to social equity. These strategies change the paradigm of community participation to community activation, ensuring successful projects long after the design professionals are gone.
An accompanying workshop to simulate the engagement deck's use as a basis for an engagement plan in urban design project scenarios has promoted the strategies at planning industry conferences, government trainings and university lectures.
